The Paradise Lagoon with Tourists From Hell
By Rainer Von Helin on Sep 1, 2014
Between the island of Comino and the small adjacent islet of Cominotto you may find the heavenly Blue Lagoon, which unfortunately at this time of year is still invaded by the tourists from hell. It’s cyan waters can easily be compared to the cleanest swimming pool, however some of its visitors seem to have a complete lack of respect towards this natural reserve. You can get to Comino by private boat or by ferry from the Cirkewwa ferry terminal, which is also where you take the ferry to go to the island of Gozo. The short ride to Comino costs each visitor between 10-15€. Once you arrive to this idyllic lagoon you feel like you have arrived to paradise, then all of a sudden you hear speedboats blasting billboard anthems and groups of jumping, sexually depraved Italians. Not so heavenly are the prices of foods and drinks served from the numerous food stands, but that can be forgiven since business on the island doesn’t last all year round. Cigarette butts can be found on each and every rock in Comino and a large majority of the groups of tourists who literally jump off the ferries to come and take a photo at the lagoon definitely don’t appreciate its true value. The island of Comino has also served as film locations for films such as The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) and Swept Away (2002), for good reason too.
Despite all the negatives, visiting the blue lagoon is a must for those on the quest for pleasure. However, those wishing to value the true beauty and tranquility of the island should visit during low season. Some breathtaking moments of beauty at the island of Comino ironically include the view from the toilets and the trip back to the main island of Malta, which is when you pass the beautiful caves and get to watch the lovers and families sharing a Kodak moment as the sun sets.
