Behind the Scenes:
New York Fashion Week
By Adam Nasr on Sep 18, 2014
In New York when fashion week comes around,
it hits you like a ton of bricks. From Meatpacking
to Soho and even stretching across the barriers
of Manhattan, you see these Amazonian like
women and men descend upon a city that during
the summer months tends to quiet down.
Whereas New Yorkers once fled to the Hamptons
at any given chance, now with a party every night
and a show in-between, why would anyone want
to be anywhere other than NYC. During this magical
week I had the chance to experience the backstage
action and after party for one of the most respected
US fashion houses – Diane von Furstenberg (DVF).
Braziers were flying and tensions were high as the newly appointed Creative Director, Michael Herz debuted his first collection for the brand, and what a collection it was. Gone are the days of basic cuts relying on an abundance of print and in comes the new DVF, which in my opinion is DVF at its core. The collection inspired by the French Riviera with influences from Picasso and Gaudi was a knock out, just picture Bridget Bardot on a boat in St. Tropez. Carefree classic elegance with a kick, I mean this is still Diane von Furstenberg.
Front and centre were Anna Wintour, Andre Leon Talley (who brought along a smiling Whoopy Goldber), Allison Williams (who will be staring in the new NBC musical Peter Pan), the Hilton sisters; the Brant brothers and even the first lady Chirlane McCray. All were watching Lily Donaldson who opened the show, followed by Kendall (no surname), Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel and Naomi Campbell who closed the show with a bang.

A few hours later and we were all at DVF’s famous store in Meatpacking for dinner and drinks. And trust me, drinking is what everyone did. Enough champagne flowed to leave the Hilton sisters stumbling down the grand white staircase where Diane, like royalty was sitting ankles crossed with a large smile, which in my mind rang as “success”. And so she should with a 1st class Spring 2015 collection done and dusted, a reality show airing on E! and a new book out. This woman is truly on top of her game and has been for the past 40 years.
Other than that my lips are sealed on the happenings behind the closed doors of the party and the crazy world of NYFW.
Until next time,
Adam Nasr
